So in the trigger reference table should it be 0 and 18 as I'm using a 36-1 trigger?

ignition outputs in use is the variable selector.

so 0.. would be 1 usable output

0..1 is 2 , 0..2 is 3 and so on.

Try upgrade to newer firmware, some of the old versions have problems with dwell control with noisy trigger signal.

Well normally without an egt sensor connected the thing reads its 1250C max, then when you bridge the wires then you get something similar to atmospheric temperature.

yeah those were maintained during the upgrade.

After the upgrade it was reading 2296 for temp.  I played with the calibration, and eventually had it reading with an 'f' as the last digit.  But no change with the sensor disconnected.

Maybe the visual dialogs in VemsTune under "basic settings" are not available under 1.1.27, I never tried. You only use VemsTune with that firmware once, when you upgrade to the latest version.
